How are you preparing for the Christmas Holidays guys? My preparations are overwhelming as I already started to look for a couple of replicas for my family members. But, considering it’s a diving-style timepiece, the thickness is pretty acceptable.
What amazes me while holding this imitation is the lightweight I feel in my hands. The first visual impression makes you think it’s a heavy piece, considering its massive dimensions. But, in fact, the forged carbon only looks heavy, while in reality, it is as lightweight as a feather. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but you got the point.
Another pleasant detail I can spot about the imitation is that the case, along with its elements (bezel, lugs, crow bridge) has a unique carbon texture. To be honest, it’s highly close to the genuine Carbotech model.
Caseback
I don’t usually talk too much about watches’ caseback. But, I’ll do it this time as there is something relevant to mention. The point is that previous Panerai imitations usually came with a display caseback. This time, the replica comes with a torpedo engraving. On one hand, I embrace the manufacturers’ attempt to reproduce the genuine watch to such an extent. On the other hand, I must admit that the attempt looks not as delicate as on the original model. It doesn’t look inaccurate though, but it’s a bit different. Also, the second ”C” from the “Carbotech” writing looks like an “O”. I’m afraid customers won’t appreciate this visual error much and I’ve already written feedback regarding this moment.
Movement
Another great news with the imitation is the reliable movement inside. It comes with a super clone P. 900 automatic movement and for those who don’t know yet, this movement has recorded great results in all kinds of tests referring to reliability and accuracy.
Overall impression
So, there are two biggest selling points here: the inside movement and the aesthetics of the imitation. The downside is the engraving error on the movement, suggesting an “O” instead of a “C”. The error is actually not visible, as it is on the interior side of the caseback. The “Carbotech” on the dial is ok. I’m prone to thinking that the next iteration of this model will have the misspelling error corrected. So, you could wait for it in 2023. Otherwise, if this interior mistake doesn’t seem critical for you as it is not visible, the imitation is pretty decent.
Pam 1229
Now let’s take a closer look at the big guy from the new Panerai release. It’s about the Submersible 1229 replica that we had the chance to receive before Christmas, and not after, as we were initially informed.
So, straight to the point, it’s a “big guy” because it’s not only massive with its 44 mm case, but it’s also imposing with its 17 mm thickness. By the way, all the steel in it is 316F grade.
With such impressive sizes, it’s hard to say if the imitation will be attractive to the general audience. But, one thing is for sure: watch enthusiasts loving diving-style pieces will undoubtedly appreciate it.
Overall appeal
The aesthetics of this watch is… common, I must admit. Steel case, black dial-all traditional. The element adding a drop of interest is the blue small hand as well as the skeleton central hour hand. I shall appreciate the finish of the date window. it looks pretty well and professionally processed, conveying the sense of a multi-layered construction. In the dark, the whole view looks expressive and bright. Perhaps, I love this imitation more in dark conditions than in usual daylight.
As for the movement, the imitation runs on a clone P.9010 movement. To be honest, I don’t know much about this movement and it’s still under my observation. I’ll keep you updated when I have more details about its reliability and long-term (or short-term???) functionality.
Pam 111
Here is another Panerai imitation that we recently received from our partners. It’s a Pam 111 model and I must say that it looks identical to these pictures. I’m sharing the picture here just to let you know how great its case finish and leather strap are. From all three versions, I’m prone to think that this model is going to meet most aesthetic demands of the customers.
But there is one specific moment you need to know. This model comes with a pretty specific manual winding movement that not all watch enthusiasts embrace (if talking about the genuine watch). As for the replica version, the owner will have to wind the replica each day even if it comes with automatic movement. The point is that even the best imitation movement isn’t strong enough to keep the power reserve for as long as a genuine version. So, if you have fun with winding watches daily, this imitation will totally comfort you.
Movement
Manufacturers decided to opt for an Asian CLONE 6497 for this imitation. It is a moderate movement, I would say. Why moderate? Because, on one hand, it functions as the genuine version, so, it has a pretty promising reliability. On the other hand, if it’s beauty that you are looking for in a movement- this movement might not satisfy you as much. It visually differs from the genuine versions and doesn’t have the decorations that the original one has. On the whole, the watch comes with a solid caseback, so it’s up to you if the different appearance bothers you much or not.
Either way, I don’t quite think that the manufacturers will come with a movement improvement soon. They are predominantly focused on Rolex, Philippe, and Heuer’s improvements, as far as I know. So, if your priority is a well-functioning movement, these imitations will do. If, on the contrary, you look for an identical-looking inner construction, you’ll have to wait for some time.
Final thoughts
